Education saved my life

My life story is what has inspired this website and my mission here at The Learning Fix. At different points in my life I have been the bullied and troubled teenager, the stay-at-home mother in a lonely marriage, and a single-mom of amazing children but feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. It is in all of these times and situations that education, both formal and informal, saved my life and gave me joy. Of course I gained joy and purpose in other areas of my life but I often found that it was learning something new or challenging my thinking in some way that snapped me out of a dark and spiraling place. I think it is an amazing tool, along with other helps out there, to healing emotional hurts. This is one reason I started The Learning Fix.

I have been a college instructor for almost 30 years now. I spend my days teaching and learning in order to teach some more. I have thoroughly enjoyed it (almost all of it). I have watched students come into my classrooms feeling stupid or incapable of academic success due to their past experiences. My best teaching moments are when I watch their eyes light up with understanding or hear them tell me that they actually believe in their abilities now. I wish I could help everyone who has been told they are dumb or that something was wrong with them. That’s another reason I started The Learning Fix..

If there is one thing this past year of Covid restrictions and quarantines has taught me, it is how much our minds and hearts need social norms and interactions even if they are general and public. I found that interactive experiences of any sort, even if it was online, was helpful to keep a sense of normalcy. That is another reason I started The Learning Fix.

In general I have always wanted to find a way to help those around me, continue my own personal healing, and have some fun. I know that for me this means teaching. I am hopeful that for you attending a class here with us could do the same.
